Nexenta sells a software based NAS and iSCSI solution that is built on their Open Source NexentaOS GNU/OpenSolaris project. OK. This is getting pretty cool. As crankish users of GNU/Linux as a designation on NetAdminTools for many years, it is nice to see Stallman’s logic show itself in a clarifying way. Sure, GNU/Hurd is a possibility, but yowser, a full on OpenSolaris running with a full GNU system as a distribution? What a great idea, especially for a storage system that uses ZFS. The network is the computer… scratch that, we have the network. We need storage and yet more storage. Nexenta provides their commercial version free of charge with their developer edition. It is limited to 1 TB of user data. We grabbed the VMware Image and took NexentaStor out for a spin:
