Remote Desktop Management Solution for Microsoft Very detailed article on setting up VNC with Stunnel for secure remote control of Windows boxen. |
Danware NetOp Remote Control We installed NetOp Version 6 in our lab on an NT 4.0 SP6 server as a host, and NT 4.0 SP6 workstation client (guest). OK. Coolest of all was that a reboot was not required. Yeah, yeah, features galore, but why do so many administration tools require a reboot? Administration tools should move towards five nines, rather than nine fives. :) So, ten points for no reboot required. There is no icon when the host is running if you don't want it. This is nice for documentation screen shots and to keep the users from messing with your remote control settings. One gripe we have always had with PCAnywhere is that the ctrl-alt-del icon is right next to the restart host icon. With NetOp, the ctrl-alt-del keystroke is on a menu off of the upper left icon. Some other useful keystrokes are there. Another cool thing about NetOp is that it lets you choose just the programs you want to install: guest (client), host, gateway, log server, access server. The install is quick and minimal. We have just 16 colors 640X480 on our server, and many many colors and higher resolution on our client. NetOp's colors map better than PCAnywhere. The NetOp client (guest) also performed really well under VMware (Win98 virtual machine running on Linux); we were surprised at how well it kept up. We like it. Check it out. |
Remote Administrator for Win9x/NT Claims to be very fast, outperforming all of the well known commercial remote control packages and 150 times faster than VNC. As always, be extremely wary of running untested software on your servers! |
Symantec pcANYWHERE We've used this for years. We recently purchased a copy of 9.0 for our lab,and as always are quite happy with it. |
Proxy by Funk Software "Proxy" is supposed to be simple and fast. Funk Software also hasa RAS called Wanderlink and other products 30 day free trial. |
LapLink LapLink claims to have the fastest file transfer and has plenty of features to offer. Their SpeedSync technology can apparently look inside a file and transfer only those portions which have changed. The caching and remote application launching speeds are said to be impressive, as well. Free evaluation copy and some technical support available at web site. As we mentioned with the pcANYWHERE product, this one is very well integrated with NT. The multilink support is particularly intriguing |
Remote Task Manager for Windows NT/2000/XP the network management software Remote Task Manager is a systems control interface that can be run from any remote Windows NT/2000/XP computer. This enables a Systems Administrator to control most aspects of a remote environment. The simple-to-use, tabbed interface separates applications, services, devices, processes, events, shared resources and performance monitor, making each of these very easy to control.
